SCARRING AND ACNE SCARRING

Scarring is a normal part of the wound healing response following injury to the skin.  A scars normal progression sees it going from red / pink and occasionally raised to pale and flat as it heals over time.

Some people are much more prone to scarring than others, irrespective of injury. Scarring can also cause pigmentary changes in the skin, leaving the area red or with hyperpigmentation.  Scarring can cause significant concern and impact on self-confidence particularly with severe acne scarring, hypertrophic scars and keloid scars.

WHAT TYPES OF SCARRING DO YOU TREAT?

HYPERTROPHIC SCARS

Hypertrophic scars are raised, thickened scars which are commonly red in colour. They generally occur when a wound is impaired (infection or tensions on the wound during the healing phase).

KELOID SCARS

Keloid scars are more common in darker skin types and can occur almost immediately post skin trauma or months later. Keloids are firm, raised and can be red in colour, often extending over the border of the original wound. In some people they may occur after very minor injury to the skin. They can be painful and itchy and often cause emotional distress to those that have them due to the appearance.

ACNE SCARRING

In some moderate to severe cases of acne, it is not uncommon to experience acne scarring. These scars can present as deep, narrow sitting scars (ice-pick), broad depressions with sloping edge (rolling scars), broad depressions with sharply defined edges (boxcar scars) flat, thin or depressed scars (atrophic), thick lumpy scars (hypertrophic or keloid scars) or post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This scarring occurs when the congested unit ruptures, causing the debris to be released into the dermis. The skin is then unable to produce the required amount of collagen to fix itself leaving a depression in the dermis.

STRETCH MARKS

Stretch marks occur following the stretching of skin, commonly during puberty, pregnancy and weight gain. They can occur anywhere on the body but are common on the breasts, abdomen and thigh areas. They first appear as red or purple and will fade over time to white or silver. They are caused from the depletion and damage to collagen fibres at times of rapid growth.

NEW SCARRING

Most scars will settle over time and become less noticeable. Some types of scarring can be much more persistent, causing distress to those who have them. Scars can be resistant to treatment deeming them difficult to treat, so a combination approach is generally used in treatment.

For new scars a conservative treatment regime is often utilised so as to prevent further scarring. Topical treatment such as scar specific ointments, silicone gels and patches may be utilised in this instance.

OLD OR MORE SEVERE SCARRING

Our cosmetic doctor may also utilise intra-lesional corticosteroid injections when treating older or severe scarring. This is beneficial in treating hypertrophic and keloid scarring to treat underlying inflammation, bypassing the thickened and damaged top layer of the scar to reduce skin thinning and actively treating the scar at the dermal layer.

When treating old or severe scars, there is always risk of further scarring, particularly if the individual is prone to hypertrophic or keloid scarring.
