SKIN SAGGING AND WRINKLES
One of the key presentations of ageing skin is ‘sagging’ and wrinkles caused by a loss of elasticity and laxity.

As we age, our ability to create collagen and elastin diminishes. Elastin creates the skins ability to stretch and return to its original state. When elastin is depleted the skin becomes loose and is unable to maintain its structure and position. When healthy collagen is lost and its ability to produce is reduced the skin loses strength and thickness. This means the skin is generally thinner and less firm.
Not only does the skin change, sagging skin and wrinkles can also be attributed to the loss of supportive structures under the skin. These include facial fat pads, bone and cartilage. These structures all begin to atrophy (decrease in size) with age, meaning the skin loses its support causing sagging.

We all will experience this as a part of intrinsic ageing, however this process can be rapidly accelerated by exposure to extrinsic ageing factors. The major contributors in extrinsic ageing include, chronic UV Radiation exposure, smoking, air pollution, poor nutrition, rapid and extensive weight loss.
'Sagging skin prevention by avoidance of UVR exposure, pollution and smoking are the keys to preventing early onset.'
SKIN SCANS APPROACH TO TREATING SKIN SAGGING AND WRINKLES
When treating skin ageing, sun protection is utilised as the primary method of prevention and treatment.
The use of other cosmeceutical products including Vitamin C, Retinol and AHAs may be recommended in conjunction to treatment. Our in clinic treatments strive to induce collagen and elastin production and restore volume loss. As ageing presents differently in each person we often opt to create a multi-modality treatment plan to ensure long term results and prevent further damage.
Every new patient of Skin Scan requires a full cosmetic consultation that includes clinical photography and skin and medical assessment based on your concern and expectation. Your current skin care will be reviewed and your practitioner will tailor a treatment and at home care plan that is specific to you. If necessary, our cosmetic doctor may prescribe prescription medication.
